Project Planning and Tracking (PPT) Releases

Using the Project Planning and Tracking (PPT) feature, you can now track application readiness by defining milestones for activities of an application release in the Releases module. PPT uses key performance indicators (KPIs) to analyze the data of your defined milestones. The overall health and deployment readiness of a release in displayed in the form of a scorecard. The scorecard monitors and tracks how well each milestone is being met on a daily basis. To further analyze your output, you can generate dashboard reports and graphs.
For more information, refer to the HP Application Lifecycle Management User Guide: Project Planning and Tracking (PPT) Releases.
PPT is not available for HP Quality Center Starter Edition, HP Quality Center Enterprise Edition, or HP ALM Performance Center Edition.

PPT Releases Overview

Project planning and tracking (PPT) enables quality assurance managers to track application readiness by defining goals for activities of an application release.
For each release, you define release scope items. A release scope item refers to a subdivided section of a release, for example a new feature, a change to an existing feature, or a new theme. For each scope item you define the related requirements, tests, test sets, and defects. To measure the progress of the release scope items, you associate them with milestones. A milestone is a point in the time-line of a release that signifies the completion of a deliverable. It enables you to track and validate the progress of the release. A milestone can be associated with one or more release scope items.
PPT collects and analyzes the data from the defined milestones using key performance indicators (KPIs). A KPI is a quantifiable measure designed to track a critical performance variable over time, and measure the essential outcome of quality assurance activities. For each KPI, you define threshold levels to set warning limits.
PPT uses the KPIs to analyze a milestone's readiness data, and to show the overall health and deployment readiness of a release in the form of a scorecard. The scorecard monitors and tracks how well each milestone is being met on a daily basis. To further analyze your output, you can generate dashboard reports and graphs.
ALM Editions: Functionality related to PPT is not available for Quality Center Starter Edition, Quality Center Enterprise Edition, or Performance Center Edition.

How to Work with PPT

This task describes how to define releases, release scopes and milestones, and how to track release scope status in the Releases module. To learn more about PPT, see PPT Releases Overview.
ALM Editions: Functionality related to PPT is not available for Quality Center Starter Edition, Quality Center Enterprise Edition, or Performance Center Edition.
Tip: For a use-case scenario related to this task, see How to Work with PPT - Use-Case Scenario.
    1. Open the Releases module. On the ALM sidebar, under Management, select Releases. For user interface details on the Releases module, click here.
    2. Create folders. Right-click the Releases root folder and select New Release Folder. To create a sub-folder, right-click a folder and select New Release Folder.
    3. Add releases. Right-click a release folder and select New Release. For user interface details, click here.
    4. Alternatively, if you are working with a project that is linked to a template project, you can create a release by copying from the template project. Right-click a release folder and select New Release from Template. For user interface details, click here.
In the releases tree, select a release. Click the Release Scope tab. Add release scope items and define the related requirements, tests, test sets, and defects. For user interface details, click here.
    1. Add milestones. In the releases tree, right-click a release and select New Milestone. The New Milestone dialog box opens. Define timelines for your milestone. For user interface details, click here.
    2. Associate release scope items. In the releases tree, select a milestone. Click the Milestone Scope tab. Associate the milestone with release scope items. For user interface details, click here.
    3. Associate KPIs. Click the KPIs tab. Configure related KPIs and set boundaries for performance against those KPIs. For user interface details, click here.
    • View scorecard. In the releases tree, select a release. Click the Scorecard tab. View the status and progress of your defined milestones. For user interface details on the Scorecard tab, click here.
    • View Gantt chart. In the releases tree, select a release. Click the Master Plan tab. For user interface details, click here.
    • Create PPT graphs. For task details on how to generate graphs, click here.

Side-by-Side ALM Clients

You can now run multiple versions of HP Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) side-by-side on a workstation. This includes multiple ALM 11.00 clients connecting to different ALM Platform servers, and a single Quality Center 10.00 or 9.2 client.

The ALM Optimized Project Repository

ALM stores all project files in a project repository located under the ProjRep directory. The files in this directory are stored in an optimized folder structure that allows maximum storage space. In addition, any two files with identical content are stored only once in the ProjRep directory. This results in a significant reduction in disk space. For example, if you attach the same file to several ALM records, the file is stored only once in the project repository. Periodically, ALM clears the repository of duplicate files.
Caution: You must not make any changes to the files in the ProjRep directory. Any change to a file, including editing a file's content, can cause irreversible damage to the project repository.

Project Repository Cleanup

When you add a file to an entity, ALM checks whether an identical file exists in the project repository. If an identical file is located, no physical file is added to the repository.
When you delete a file from an entity, the file is not immediately deleted from the project directory, as it may still be used by other entities.
At regular intervals, the project repository is scanned for files that are no longer used by any entity. Any such files are deleted from the project repository. By default, each project repository is scanned once every seven days.
You can promote or postpone a project's repository cleanup. For more details, see Updating Project Details.
You can define the following site configuration parameters to regulate the project repository cleanup process:
  • REPOSITORY_GC_INTERVAL. Defines the time interval between cleanup processes of each project repository. For more details, see REPOSITORY_GC_INTERVAL.
  • REPOSITORY_GC_JOB_PRIORITY. Defines the speed at which the cleanup process is performed. For more details, see REPOSITORY_GC_JOB_PRIORITY.
  • SUSPEND_REPOSITORY_GC. Enables you to stop the project repository cleanup process. For more details, see SUSPEND_REPOSITORY_GC.

Installation ALM 11.0

The following updates have been made to the installation process. For more information, refer to the HP Application Lifecycle Management Installation Guide.
For the supported and recommended system configurations for your ALM server and client machine, refer to the HP Application Lifecycle Management 11.00 Readme.
Important: The supported environment information in the HP Application Lifecycle Management 11.00 Readme is accurate for the ALM 11.00 release, but there may be updates for ALM 11.00 patches. For the most up-to-date supported environments, refer to the HP Software Web site using the following URL: http://www.hp.com/go/TDQC_SysReq
ALM offers integrations with other HP testing tools. To verify that you are using a supported version, on the Add-ins page, click the More HP Application Lifecycle Management Add-inslink. Choose the ALM 11.00 integration matrix.
  • Validations have been added throughout the installation process.
  • The installation wizard now consists of two stages: file delivery and server configuration. This means that you can reconfigure the server without having to reinstall the application.
ALM encrypts information for accessing external systems (databases, Windows, and LDAP), and secures communication with other HP BTO applications.
Installing an ALM client no longer requires administrator privileges on the machine. Administrator privileges are still required for installing certain add-ins.
